Most patients benefit from a visit every six months. Twice-yearly cleanings and exams let us find decay or gum disease early, when it is small and simple to treat. Dr. James Yan, DDS, may suggest a different schedule if your history calls for one, and we will tell you why so you always know when your next visit is due.

General dentistry covers the routine care that keeps your teeth and gums healthy, plus the repairs that follow when something goes wrong, such as fillings. Preventive dentistry is the part focused on stopping problems before they start, including cleanings, exams, fluoride treatments and sealants. At Buckingham Family Dental you get both from the same team in one office.

We accept most dental PPO plans and submit your claims. Plans we commonly work with include Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Delta Dental, Guardian, Humana, MetLife and UnitedHealthcare. Many plans cover preventive visits twice a year, but benefits vary, so call 469-649-1017 and we will help verify your coverage. We do not accept Medicaid at this time.

Sealants are usually placed once a child’s permanent molars and premolars have come in, often between ages 6 and 12. Those back teeth have deep grooves where food and bacteria collect, so a sealant protects them during the years when cavities are most likely. We check each child’s teeth at their visit and tell you when sealants make sense.

With good care, sealants can protect teeth for several years. We check them at your routine visits to make sure they are still intact. If one chips or wears down, it can be reapplied, so your molars stay shielded from the bacteria and food debris that cause decay.

Most people feel pressure and scraping, not pain. Gums that are inflamed or have not been cleaned in a while can feel tender, and that is a good reason to slow down. Tell us the moment something bothers you and we will stop and adjust, because a cleaning should never be something you simply have to put up with.

Many people are, and you do not need to apologize for it. Tell us when you book or when you sit down, and we will go at your pace and explain each step before we do it. We also offer nitrous oxide sedation for patients who want help relaxing, and you can ask for a break at any point.
